Primary reflexes are what lay the foundation for neurological development and are located in the brain stem. They are our survival movements. When a baby is born these movements are what the baby has in its “movement tool box” to survive through the birth canal and begin moving against gravity for the first time.
Voluntary movements and posture are organized and developed through the constant practice of these primary reflex movements as the baby develops. Because these movements and their neurological connections begin so early in development they are also linked with the development of our emotional and cognitive development as well. When something has prevented any of these primary reflexes from developing properly the body can respond in stress.
MNRI supports bringing the nervous system out of a stressed state and re-engaging efficient and correct postural motor patterns by re-patterning the underlying primary reflexes.
This method has been successful in treating learning disorders, alignment discrepancies, neurological disorders and developmental delays. The Masgutova Method is based on Dr. Masgutova’s research and hands-on work with thousands of patients since 1989. It is firmly grounded on the research of a wide variety of distinguished psychologists and neurophysiologists, many of whom began their careers in Russia during the early 20th century.
HOW DOES MNRI BENEFIT ADULTS?
As described above primary reflexes are the body’s “survival reactions”. When they are triggered they are automatic, just like the knee kick when the Doctor tests your patellar reflex with the rubber hammer. When something triggers the survival signal to the brain stem the primary reflexes are engaged and the body is able to protect itself from harm. One easy example to picture is the hand supporting primary reflex. When a person begins to trip and fall their hands come out automatically, the individual does not have to think about it, it just happens. When our hand supporting primary reflex is patterned accurately we should be able to catch ourselves with minimal to no internal injury, BUT if the hand supporting primary reflex is not patterned efficiently the hands may come out, but at the incorrect angle or muscle tension. This can result in a broken bone, torn ligament or dislocation.
Another reason adults benefit from primary reflex integration is when a person has lived through a circumstance that has engaged their primary reflexes, integration back to a non alarm state does not fully happen. This can often be the case for those who suffer from PTSD or generalized anxiety.

A basic introduction to MNRI and how it benefits our clients.
A gentle, manual therapy which releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. This is done by affecting the circulation efficiency of the cerebral spinal fluid which runs throughout the brain and spinal cord. Health of this system is significant for overall well being. Many symptoms can ultimately stem from inefficient flow of the cerebral spinal fluid circulatory system. The craniosacral technique supports efficient neurological signals and can help synergize reflex integration. Developed by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger.

Develop or re-gain efficient and accurate fine and gross motor patterns which support higher level brain functions.
Integrating visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular, olfactory, somatosensory organization for accurate processing of your environment and decrease sensitivity.
Support myelination of higher level brain centers for memory, abstract thinking, task sequencing and skills needed for academic skills.
Create balance and inner control for emotional stability, self confidence and appropriate social participation.
Engage neurological re-patterning to calm pain receptors and improve circulatory systems to promote healing.
Alignment of ears, eyes, shoulders, hips and rotation through lower extremities greatly impact circulatory systems, joint health, motor patterns and negatively impacts risk of further injury.
